WHAT WERE THE MIDDLE AGES?
Historians like to organize time (centuries) into periods.  Every period is defined by people and events.  In the case of the period known as the Middle Ages, they began with the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th Century and ended with the beginning of the Renaissance (15th Century).

The Middle Ages period was unique for several reasons: firstly, it was at this time that the Roman Catholic Church became the most powerful authority in Europe; secondly, with the disappearance of the Roman Empire a new form of government developed called “feudalism”.  This unit will:

1). Describe how and why feudalism developed.
2). Describe the important role played by the Catholic Church.
3). Describe what the “feudal contract” was.
4). Explain how and why knights emerged.
5). And la
stly, describe how kings came to challenge the pope for power and influence.
